The annual MADSS Golf Outing is a summer fundraisor that supports all of the organization's programs and activities. This critical event is organized and managed by a Golf Committee with support from the MADSS board and Executive Director.

This year's walk will be June 11.

2012 Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk Coordinator - Filled for 2012 (01 Jan 2012)

The annual Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk is the largest Madison Area Down Syndrome Society (MADSS) event of the year. Its primary purpose is to fulfill the majority of our annual fundraising target. Secondarily, it must be a great community building event to the MADSS community and public awareness campaign to the general public. This year's walk will be Saturday, October 13 in the afternoon.

A Walk Coordinator (referred to as the coordinator) will be contracted to help ensure these purposes in 2012. The coordinator is fully responsible for event's participation levels, the exprience of the participants at the event, and the growth in community awareness the event generates.

We are adding a horde of new features and capabilities to our website through a partnership with Iactionable.com. This upgrade will make it easier for MADSS to share information, support and resources with its members and for members to easily share with one another.

We need a pro-bono web developer with experience in REST APIs, JavaScript and HTML.

Start or Lead a MADSS Sponsored Support or Service Group (01 Jan 2012)

Do you want to start a new group or lead an existing group. Here is the information MADSS needs in order to charter your group. This information also helps the Executive Director support the group as appropriate.

Please look these over and then call or email Sterling to schedule a time to talk. For those of you who are looking to transition leadership in your group to other individuals this is a great opportunity to do that.

We would like to know the following information:

A primary and secondary contact. These folks could be the "leaders" or just folks who are responsible for staying connected with me.
A brief description of the who the group is for and who the group's members can be.
A general sense of the activities the group is considering for 2012. First, the group should make sure it is doing this to support the people identified as "who the group is for". Second, the group should think about how it can help improve the access and inclusivity for individuals with Down syndrome. Feel free to be creative and check out the attached MADSS priorities for ideas.
A requested budget amount to cover the expenses of the bullett above. We expect the average MADSS provided budget to be $500.

For the 3^rd bullet your group can think about attaching onto past program concepts (i.e. taking on the organization of 1 or 2 Many Strands sessions, summer family outings, etc.), new program concepts (i.e. providing the volunteers for the new parent outreach system being implemented right now), or making something new. Sterling is available to help brainstorm if you’d like that.

Editor of Good Things to Know (E and Print Version) - Currently Filled (01 Jan 2012)

MADSS send out Good Things to Know as an e-newsletter every other week. The volunteer editor would partner with the Executive Director to collect relevant news, editorial content, and resources. Ideally, the editor would also use MADSS email marketing tool to send the e-newsletter.

At the moment there is not a plan for a print newsletter.

2012 Lose the Training Wheels Bike Camp Director (01 Jan 2012)

Lose The Training Wheels™ is more than just a bike-riding program. For many children with disabilities it is a seemingly impossible task they can typically master in less than a week’s time. Within days of learning to ride, many children exhibit independent behaviours for the first time ever. This achievement, in turn, creates a gateway of opportunity, helping them gain assurance and self-reliance in many other aspects of their lives. Overview and Guidelines

The Life Enhancement Program (LEP) is open to all individuals with Down syndrome and their families that live in Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Richland, Rock, and Sauk Counties and are members in good standing of the Madison Area Down Syndrome Society (MADSS). The 2012 priorities of LEP are as follows:

1. Individuals with Down syndrome have access to resources to attain physical and mental wellness.

2. Individuals with Down syndrome develop life skills based on their individual potential.

3. Individuals with Down syndrome participate in vocational and mentorship opportunities.

4. Individuals with Down syndrome are accepted and included in community and public activities.

LEP grant requests that match one or more of the priorities above can be reimbursed/paid based on the following:

Non-covered therapeutic and medical activities and equipment can be reimbursed up to 100%. Documentation that that the activities or equipment has been provided or recommended by a licensed practitioner is required.

Educational materials (such as books, classes, conferences, technology, etc.) can be reimbursed up to100%.

Community inclusion programs (such as sports activities, recreational programming, social activities, etc.) can be reimbursed up to 50%. Daycare will not be reimbursed. The activities provided by the following organizations can be reimbursed up to 100%:
- LOV-Dane
- The ARC-Dane County
- Epilepsy Foundation of Southern Wisconsin
- Special Olympics

Regardless of the category, the maximum amount available per individual with Down syndrome is $400 for expenses incurred in 2012. Documentation (invoices, paid receipts, description of activity, etc.) must be included with this application. The final decision about qualification for LEP funds rests with MADSS’ Executive Director and LEP Committee. The LEP is funded by grants and donations to MADSS. MADSS reserves the right to decline applications if money is no longer available, if an application is incomplete, or the request does not quality. In 2012, the LEP Fund will have no more than $9,500 depending donations and grants MADSS receives for this program. 60% of grants for 2012 expenses will support priorities 1 and 2 above. The remaining 40% of grants will support priorities 3 and 4 above.

Applications will be reviewed by the MADSS LEP Committee and will be paid monthly. To ensure timely consideration, grant applications with documentation must be received on or before the first day of each month. All requests for 2012 must be received before January 1^st, 2013.

The Madison Area Down Syndrome Society, Inc. (MADSS) is working to ensure inclusive and accepting communities for individuals with Down syndrome through education, support and growing awareness. Active as an informal support group for over 20 years, MADSS attained 501(c)3 status in early 2003. Over the years MADSS has served hundreds of families impacted by Down syndrome across Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Richland, Rock and Sauk counties.

MADSS is currently lead by a board of ten members and managed by an Executive Director. As the source of governance and leadership, the MADSS board is the organization’s anchor to the individuals with Down syndrome in our community and determines the priorities of the organization. To fulfill its purpose, the individual members of the MADSS board must work cooperatively to move the organization forward in a positive, productive and mission-centered manner.

The LEP is rated as the most effective of MADSS programs by its members. Grant applications for money from the LEP fund are reviewed a team. This team consists of the Executive Director and two volunteer member reviewers. This team also can create policy for the LEP fund as along as it aligns with general MADSS policy.

In 2012 this team will meet monthly to review applications until the fund is exhausted. Appointments to this committee is until the end of January 2013.

Hi Moms -

We've had a lot of fun at our Moms Take 5. Whether or not you've been lately, I hope you'll join us soon. We've had fun connecting with other moms who 'get it' and we've really had a nice exchange of ideas and resources. We have so much to learn from one another!

Based on suggestions from our last outing, here are our plans for the next few months...

April 5 (Thursday)- 5:30 at Bonfyre (http://www.bonfyregrille.net/) I will try to reserve (or get there early to get) a cozy spot for us to talk. (I was thinking in comfy chairs around the fireplace like last time we were there - I also heard there is a private room we could maybe use.) As always, it really helps if I have a good idea of how many are going to join us so if you could RSVP, that would be great.
